About the Dual Language Enrichment Program
Gainesville ISD implemented the Two-Way Dual Language Enrichment Program of English and Spanish instruction for students beginning the 2017-2018 school year.
The Two-Way Dual Language model is a program in which both English and Spanish speaking learners are placed in the same classroom to learn from each other while acquiring the non-native language.
The goal of Dual Language is to provide opportunities for all students, regardless of their native language, to obtain a second language while interacting with students from diverse cultures and backgrounds, setting the stage for cultural awareness and global citizenship.
Eligible students are:
· English speaking students entering Pre-K, Kindergarten, or first grade
· Spanish speaking students (eligible as Limited English Proficient) who will be entering Pre-K, Kinder, or first grade
Students should consistently remain in the Dual Language program to receive the full benefit of the Dual Language Enrichment Program.
Dual Language Two-Way classrooms contain a mix of students who speak English with students who speak Spanish. This combination of students makes intense interaction and learning possible. In this setting, students learn not only to speak, read and write in Spanish but also follow a rigorous academic program in English becoming fully bilingual and biliterate.
Currently GISD has a one-way program:
- One-Way Dual Language encourages students from "one language" group to become bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate. For example, students whose primary language is Spanish would learn in English and Spanish.
Beginning in 2017--2018, GISD will implement a two-way program:
- Two-Way Dual Language is a distinctive form of dual language education in which balanced numbers of native English speakers and native Spanish speakers are integrated for instruction so that both groups of students serve in the role of language model and language learner at different times.
Program DesignStudents are formally taught to read in their native language through grade 1, and then in grades 2-5 are formally taught to read in both languages by receiving literacy instruction in both languages daily. Students are taught mathematics through the English language and social studies and science through the Spanish language beginning in grades K (or PK).
Students participate daily in various methods of bilingual “support” activities designed to develop social and academic bilingualism and bi-literacy as well as academic skills/concepts appropriate for the grade.
