2017-18 Teachers of the Year
During the school year, GISD recognizes a teacher each month at the board meeting. Teachers are nominated by campus principals and selected by the district leadership committee. Each teacher of the month recipient is then encouraged to apply for our GISD Teacher of the Year. This year, six teachers applied for this prestigious award, and after careful consideration, GISD is proud to announce that the Elementary Teacher of the Year is Isreal Garcia and the Secondary Teacher of the Year is Glenn Fuhrmann. The applications for Garcia and Fuhrmann have been submitted to ESC Region 11 to compete for Regional Teacher of the Year.
Garcia is a Kindergarten dual language teacher at Edison Elementary. In his three years at Edison, Garcia was first a bilingual teacher to Spanish-speaking students was instrumental in launching the first year of the two-way dual language immersion program, now teaching Spanish to native and non-native speakers. Garcia also serves as the Kindergarten team lead. Garcia is loved by his students and is known for his enthusiastic teaching style and the relationships built with not only his students, but their families as well.
Fuhrmann has completed his 20th year of teaching at GISD, including 9 years at GJH followed by 11 years teaching Social Studies at GHS. Throughout his 20 years at GHS, he has developed relationships with a tremendous amount of students. He models the GHS motto of "Every Leopard. Every Day" by providing a safe and supportive environment where his students feel encouraged to take risks. Fuhrmann is a key motivator within his classroom and with his colleagues.
Congratulations to our 2017-18 Teachers of the Year!
