• Small Group Counseling

The purpose of small group counseling is to enhance student learning by helping students improve their perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors. Children learn from each other and help each other. Ultimately, the goal of an elementary small group is to prevent problems in the future by teaching children new skills.

    Examples of Small Groups

    • Anger Management
    • Grief/Loss
    • Divorce/Family Changes
    • Social Skills/Friendship
    • Self-esteem
    • Study Skills

    Individual Counseling

Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) may be provided on an individual basis when classroom counseling and small group are not meeting the students’ developmental or situational needs. CBT encourages kids to generate more realistic versions of situations and their ability to cope with them through focusing on their thoughts and how they affect behavior and emotion. By teaching kids that thoughts, behaviors, and emotions work together, students can gradually break down their challenges into smaller manageable steps. Play Therapy is used because not all kids can use their words to express how they feel. Play Therapy is a non-directive therapy where children play with a variety of toys and the counselor lets the child guide the session. Play Therapy helps children build confidence, self-esteem, and the ability to communicate in a way that is most comfortable for the child.
