Sissie Gilbreath Award

Sissie Award

In June 2020, the Gainesville ISD community lost one of our very own, Mrs. Sissie Gilbreath.  Sissie was a beloved employee for many years.  Her long withstanding career at GISD started as a paraprofessional at Edison and Chalmers Elementary before earning her degree and began teaching Special Education at Chalmers.  In addition, she became a bus monitor for our Special Education students until she obtained her CDL license and spent time driving both Regular Education and later Special Education buses.  She retired from teaching Special Education students at Chalmers in 2016.  Sissie returned to GISD as a bus driver on a Special Education route until her passing in 2020.

Sissie had an infectious personality that would light up a room with laughter.   As a way to honor her spirit, the transportation department developed the “Sissie” award in her honor. The name of each “Sissie award” recipient is added to the plaque which hangs on the break room wall.  The recipient also gets to utilize a reserved parking spot for that month.

The awardees exhibit the many wonderful attributes of Sissie:

Special Individual
Interesting
Sincere
Selfless
Inquisitive
Enjoyable
