GISD Announces New Director of Special Education

Brittenie Polk Special Education
GISD is pleased to announce Mrs. Brittenie Polk as the new Director of Special Education.  Mrs. Polk came to GISD in 2016 as the Principal of W.E. Chalmers Elementary.  Polk has been in education for a total of 14 years, with the past 7 in campus administration at both the secondary and elementary levels.
Mrs. Polk graduated from West Texas A&M University with a Bachelors in History and a Minor in Education.  She later obtained a Masters degree from Abilene Christian University.

As spoken by Rita Pearson, Mrs. Polk believes that "every child deserves a champion—an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.”

Polk fills the role of Kim Otto, who is retiring from GISD after 10 years as the Director of Special Education.  Otto leaves public education with a total of 32 years of service, 28 of those in GISD, and will transition to the Principal of St. Mary's Catholic School.
"I have enjoyed my years growing as an educator at GISD as a teacher, Principal, and Director.  The last ten years have been deeply rewarding working with special education students and their families," Otto said.  "I am excited for my new endeavors at St. Mary's.  The students and staff at GISD will always hold a special place in my heart, and I know that the Special Services department is in good hands with Mrs. Polk."
