Immigration Policies
Since the inauguration of the 47th president, several executive orders and policy changes have been introduced, some of which have received significant media attention for their impact on immigration policies across the United States. One recent executive order, in particular, removes schools from the “sensitive location” designation, raising questions about how school districts should respond to potential immigration enforcement activities by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), or other law enforcement agencies.
Although our school district remains a place where every child and family is valued, respected, and cared for, we understand that these changes may bring feelings of anxiety, concern, and fear for many of our families, students, and staff. Please know that we are aware of these challenges and are committed to supporting you through this uncertain time. Our goal is to ensure you feel informed and confident in our shared commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all.
Gainesville ISD campuses are staffed with the Gainesville ISD Police Department. Anyone, including law enforcement officials, must follow our established campus entry procedures to gain access to the building. Additionally, any law enforcement official seeking to access or question students or staff on campus must adhere to district protocols. This includes providing proper identification to verify their identity and confirming the legal authority for their request. Please be assured that we have thoroughly reviewed these procedures with our campus principals. They are fully committed to upholding all protocols to ensure the safety and security of everyone on their campus.
Each school year, we ask our parents to update their contact information in Ascender Parent Portal. This ensures timely district information is received. Parents can update their child’s emergency contact information in two ways: (1) access your Parent Portal account and update the contact information and pick up list, or (2) if the parent cannot access Parent Portal, they can contact the campus office to receive assistance in updating their information. Along with updating their personal contact information, we urge parents to update the list of individuals approved to drop off and pick up their child from school.
Our district’s counselors are fully prepared to provide resources and support to help our students and families navigate feelings of anxiety or other emotions they may be experiencing during this time. Feel free to contact your child’s school counselor for support.
Please know that GISD is committed to ensuring the well-being of every student, regardless of their immigration status. We encourage you to reach out with any additional questions or concerns, and we will do our best to provide the support and information you need. Together, we remain dedicated to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where all students are excited to learn.
